Today the town of
Hastings (famous for the battle) in East Sussex celebrates 150 years of
RNLI lifeboats. Unlike the US Coastguard, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution is a private charity whose life-saving operations are completely payed for by donations & with some exceptions the crews are all volunteer. Hastings has a beach launched fishing fleet of small boats & between these, swimmers, pleasure craft & the mass of heavy shipping passing through the
Strait of Dover the Hastings Lifeboat stays busy.
